CSA Newsletter #5
Welcome to Week 5 of the Summer CSA program! Can you believe we are half way through the season already! My word, it sure goes fast!
The Farm is hopping these days as crops are starting to hit pretty heavily. Weeding used to be our primary chore and now it’s harvesting and stocking the farm store. Always an indication that summer is peaking and it won’t be long before we start thinking about fall. But for now, let’s enjoy the dog days of summer and the beautiful Montana outdoors!
This past Saturday, we hosted a Yoga Class at the farm. Yup, they did Goat Yoga…it really was BarnYard Yoga since we had mini-pigs, kitties, peacocks joining in all the fun! Thanks to one of our CSA members for coming up with the idea and organizing her crew of people to come and see what our animals would do!
In the Bags this week…..
~New Potatoes: These are the first of the potatoes! These are just the early potatoes….we love when they are little like this before they get big. The interns just did a light field wash of them so they are not fully cleaned.
~Zucchini: Holy cow! These are reproducing at lightening speed! We literally had harvested them and then overnight, the planted are loaded again! If your burnt out, remember you can parboil chunks, pop them into cold water then let dry and bag up to freeze them for the winter. I also shred a lot for bread and also to toss into soups during the winter as well.
~Lettuce: The days of greens are numbered with this intense heat. So enjoy while you can! You are getting romaine and a red-leaf lettuce today. We are having grilled steak salads tonight…a nice easy dinner on a hot evening!
~Cherries: If you’re able to save your cherries and not eat them all, here’s a lovely dessert for you to try! If you need more cherries, we have the Farm Store fridge stocked with them! Yummy Cherry Dessert
~Onions: Walla Walla sweet and a red onion for you this week. Full Shares, you received an extra onion this week.
~Garlic: These are the first bulbs out of the ground! The rest of the crop will get harvested in the next week or so. Nothing like freshly harvested garlic!
~Red Cabbage: The first cabbages of the season!! Gosh, we really love red cabbage for everything! As the lettuce melts away with the summer heat, the sturdy cabbage makes its way into almost every meal for us during these late summer days. Here’s a fantastic recipe which our family could eat every day….Perfect Summer Fish Tacos with Cabbage Slaw
Enjoy the harvest of the week!! 🧡
Our youngest son just returned from a week in Washington DC for a FFA Leadership conference. He had the opportunity to meet with Jon Tester, our state senator and talk about agriculture in Montana. He also was able to meet and see the committee working on the current Farm Bill. Such a great experience for a young person! It really brought to life what we do and the importance of agriculture in our country!
