2024 CSA Newsletter Week #7-Tuesday & Thursday

Our apologies to you guys for not getting the newsletter out last week on Thursday or again this past Tuesday. As all of you know from your own experience, the storm kinda wrecked havoc! We obviously didn’t have power on Thursday and now our internet is ka-put! We finally got power back around 9:30pm on Friday night but it looks like Spectrum won’t get to us until mid week next week. So, it’s challenging to get online unless we use our phones. But I was able to access my hot spot to send a newsletter out this week to both Tuesday and Thursday members!

This is right next to the market garage. we lost a bunch of trees and big branches in that yard. along with losing some shingles and the wind caved in the big garage door.

This is the north farm property across 3 rd street. the back half is all wooded and it took a hard hit. estimation at this point is 35% of the trees are blown over or severely damaged.

But the important news is everyone is alright and all the animals survived as well! It was a crazy, busy 48 hours trying to get water (without a working pump) to the animals and eventually to the crops. Plus, we had to maintain all our freezers in order to not lose all our meat for the Farm Store. Jon and Ethan were amazingly clever and figured out all the generator engineering on how to get water from our wells. We worked from sun up to sun down every day. Once we got a system going and a routine, it was actually satisfying to fall into bed knowing the farm was ok! But it was a big celebration when the power kicked back on! We hope all of you survived it without too much loss and headache!

Other than that, our week around the farm was pretty quiet….other than all the chainsawing and generators roaring. LOL!

We did welcome the cooler temps and rain on Tuesday. What a nice reprieve from the extreme temps this summer! We are gearing up for another little heat wave this week. Hoping it helps speed up the corn!

Okay, here is what your bags look like this week: (THIS IS ALSO WEEK 4 OF THE MEAT CSA!)

~Zucchini: I’m totally trying these roll-ups this week! Don’t they sound so yummy?! Zucchini Roll Ups with Herbed Cream Cheese

~Green Beans: The star of the show this week! They are so delicious and fresh! IF any actually make it into our kitchen (we love eating them fresh picked!) we love to roast them with olive oil, and just salt & pepper! So simple and elegant!

~Radishes: Our last crop of radishes!

Purple Cabbage: This cabbage lasts forever in the refridge! We shred it thin and then put in a ziploc bag. It will last weeks! Then we use it for slaws, on tacos, sauteed up with some sesame oil, or even just as a fresh salad. It’s also great on sandwiches too! And that color….beautiful!

~Sweet Onions: grill these puppies up or roast them in your oven. They are so sweet and creamy! Farmer Jon’s favorite!

~Cherries: Enjoy! Probably the last of the season! Boo-hoo!

We hope you enjoy your weekend! Stay cool out there and Happy August!

Depsite the destructive winds, the farm still looks so beautiful this time of year!
