Last Week of Summer CSA Program!
/The days are getting shorter, the nights are cooling off faster and school is starting soon. Those are all indications that the sun is setting on summer. That also means this is week #10 for our Summer CSA Program. It sure has been a great summer and the interns along with our family have enjoyed filling bags with produce for you each week. We hope you ate well, tasted something new and shared the abundance with your family and friends too!
We didn’t get a newsletter out last week because I swear we went from high speed to lightening speed last week. Everything needed harvesting and animals needed to shift locations for breeding. By the end of the day on Tuesday, I was falling into bed and realized I failed to do the newsletter! Sorry about that!
We are in full harvest mode these days. Onions have almost all been harvested and hung up to dry. Potatoes are being harvested every day. We’ve sheared the tomato plants and now are plucking ripe tomatoes daily. It’s a all hands-on deck moment for the farm these days.
We are also trying to prep fields for the winter by cleaning them up and getting a cover crop planted so it has time to grow still this season. The cover crop serves two purposes: it is great feed for the animals in the winter when we let them into the field and then it also adds extra nutrients to the the soils. We started this last year and saw such an improvement in the health of the soil.
If you signed up for our Fall Share Program, you will be getting an email with details in the next couple of weeks. We do have a few spots left so if you didn’t sign up and are interested, please let us know asap!
And don’t forget about our annual Pumpkin Festival the month of October! We are open 7 days a week and folks can wander the farm, pick a pumpkin from the patch and enjoy the beauty of fall on the farm! During weekends we will have live music, food trucks, fresh pressed apple cider and lots more! It’s a fun time to come to the farm!
If you are thinking ahead to next year’s CSA Program here’s the scuttle on that….we will notify the current members first and you will have the chance to renew your CSA membership before we open it up our waitlist. So, be on the watch in March for the renewal email!
We are so grateful for your participation in our Summer CSA program. Your support makes a difference to our family and to our farm. The interns know you by name from writing it on the tags each week and they feel like they know you! We truly have enjoyed preparing the bags for you every week. It’s fun to walk through the fields and the walk-in cooler every Tuesday morning to determine what’s ready to be harvested or what has been harvest that is ready to go in the bags. So, from all of us at Turner Farms: THANK YOU!!
Here is what’s in the bags for the last time this year:
~Green Cabbage: some of these are the small, second crop cabbages. Don’t forget, you can shred cabbage and put it in a ziploc and refridgerate for many weeks!
~Carrots: Some of the first fof the season. They are splendid!
~Zucchini: We couldn’t send you off for the season without some more zucchini! LOL!!
~Cucumbers: Can you ever get too many cucumbers?! We don’t think so! Enjoy because once these are gone, they are gone until next year!
~Potatoes: These can be stored for some time so if you want to keep them for a bit, they will stay nice and fresh!
~Onions: we closed out your bags this week with a sampling of onions. A red, white and yellow onion!
~Green Beans: These plants are epic this year! They had such a hard start to life and had to be replanted 3 different times but they are producing like there’s no tomorrow!
~Bag of Shisito peppers. Again these are the frying type of peppers. Sweet and fun to use in a variety of different ways!
~Peaches: A sweet ending to a great year!
