CSA Newsletter #6
/This is the season we live for! Almost everything is hitting right now and we literally are running from the field to the Farm Store to keep things stocked up! It’s exhausting but oh, soooo fun! I love the mornings when all the interns are here and everyone is in high gear! It’s just so exciting and the energy is off the charts! It truly is what we wait for all year!
The heat wave this past weekend made for some intense harvesting moments and lots of plunges in the pool and pond! But we always welcome the heat for a bit to help the corn, tomatoes and peppers. They thrive in the hot temps. So we saw some significant growth in all those crops this weekend. Ripe tomatoes are still about 2 weeks out and the corn….probably about 10-12 days. That hail storm set it back otherwise we’d be digging our teeth into sweet corn right now!
The interns felt bad last week when they showed me the romaine lettuce they gave you! My face said it all, apparently! LOL! So, they made sure you received a nice bag of romaine this week! Whoops, sorry about that!
What’s in your bag this week:
~Romaine lettuce
~Cauliflower and Broccoli
~Flathead Cherries: These are from The Last Best Orchard in Big Fork. They are so yummy and truly the taste of Montana summer!
~Apricots: Jon and I always make a stop at some local farms north of Spokane every year for our anniversary and we love bringing back some tasty fruit for you guys and our farm store! These apricots are one of our favs! So tasty and juicy!
~Raspberries: I have two young interns who have mastered picking raspberries. They do a great job and since our bushes are on a nonstop production mode, these kiddos are getting a daily workout!
~Zucchini: It’s here! Wahoo! Always so fun to explore new things to do with zucchini and also utilize the standards! I know, I know…in a few weeks we’ll all be tired of zucchini but let’s get excited about it now! If you need more for freezing, swing by the farm store! We are loaded with big zucchinis! I’m making Tex Mex taco boats for dinner and will make extras to freeze for a quick meal down the road!
~Cucumbers: The first of the season! So refreshing!
~Walla Walla Onions: Getting good sized! Have you thrown one on the grill yet?!
Garlic: We are still harvesting the garlic! Slowly but surely we will get it out of the ground and cured before the snow flies!
Green Beans: Farmer Jon has been harvesting these green beans non stop all weekend! We have grown lots of different beans but these are hands down our very favorite! They are so tasty, tender and productive! Enjoy!
I hope you all have a great week! Looks like the temps are cooling off for a bit so it’ll be nice to get out and enjoy these dog days of summer!
