Week 4 CSA Newsletter
/Things around the farm are really shifting into summer mode! The farm is buzzing every morning with farm camp kids and full slate of interns! It makes our hearts so happy to stand in the Farm Yard and watch all the activity. So many happy kids and so many kids learning the love of agriculture! It’s just the best part of our day!
Today is week #4 of our CSA program. We always love when we start to see the shift in produce this time of the year. Things are starting to kick into gear and everyday is like an Easter Egg hunt as we discover new crops ready to be harvested!
The damage from the hail is still evident on many of the crops but we are slowly seeing the plants recover and regenerate. Great news for all of us! But you’ll still see some damage on things this week.
Also, as we move into different crops, it’s worth reminding everyone that we are truly an organic farm and we don’t use spray for insects. So that means some of the crops may have little nibble marks from bugs. We also say that’s our insurance to you that we are organic! We do try to rinse off any caterpillars, etc on the broccoli, cabbage or cauliflower but sometimes they hide from us. It’s always a good idea to soak those crops in a sink of cold water before eating.
What’s in the bag this week:
~Garlic Scapes-chop one of these up super fine and blend well with soften butter and then spread on warm, fresh bread! You’ll think you died and went to heaven. One of our sons’ girlfriend made homemade sourdough bread for us this past weekend (extra bonus points for her! LOL) so we made up a few batches of Garlic Scape butter and slathered it over pieces of her bread! Ohhhh, yummy!
~Potatoes: Freshly dug this morning just for you! They have been rinsed off but not washed so be sure to clean them up a little more before eating! How about a baked potato or mashed potatoes with some garlic scape butter???? Yes, please!
~Zucchini- Zucchini is here! Wahoo! So many great ways to use this fun summer veggie! Here is a delicious recipe for you to try: Summer Pasta with Zucchini
~ Broccoli- The interns harvested some beautiful broccoli today! Wow! Here are some fun ideas for the broccoli: Broccoli Recipes
~Onions- More fresh onions! These are red/purple onions! These are some of our favorite because they are so flavorful and look beautiful in salads and on sandwiches! Also included is a storage onion…good for burgers or chop them up and freeze them for the winter!
~Cabbage: The first of the cabbages came in today! We LOVE fresh cabbage…we use it like lettuce! It’s the best on tacos, or as a salad or in a rice bowl! Mmmm!
~Coffee Sample- We are so lucky to have a collaboration with Bates’ Beanery. We worked with them to develop two special blends made just for Turner Farms. You have a sample of our FarmHouse Favorite blend. It’s what we drink at Turner Farms everyday! Enjoy!
Hope you have a nice week!
