Week 1 of the Fall Farm Share Program!
/Happy Almost Fall! It’s one of the best times of year on the farm! So much abundance and everything is at its height for the season! It’s the last push before the quiet of winter sets in! There’s an energy in the air that is unique to only this time of the year!
Here we go! Four weeks of hefty produce, folks! I tell people all the time, this is the CSA to sign up for! You will be set for a while on food!
As mentioned in the description, we try to focus on crops which will last you a little while. These first couple of weeks, since Mother Nature has blessed us with an extended season, you will still be seeing summer time crops too. Like the tomatoes and peppers! But as the weeks go on, expect to see things which you can store for the winter.
So, get your house ready for some storage! Basements, garages and crawl spaces are ideal spots to store your veggies. You want a space which is cool but doesn’t freeze and is dark. These are the ideal conditions to help your produce last as long as possible. I will also mention other methods for certain crops as they appear in the bags.
As always, if you have questions, please shoot us a message for comment below and we’ll be happy to help!
What’s in the Bags today?
~Tomatoes
~Large zucchini: We love making taco boats and gyro boats with zucchini! But did you know that you can either make them and then freeze them OR you can prepare your zucchini boats first, freeze them and then pull them out this winter to prepare whatever type of boat you want to make (italian, tuna, taco, etc!). This is how we are going to preserve a bunch this year!
Scoop out the seeds just as you would before filling them up. Then they are ready! The secret for frozen zucchini halves is to flash freeze them on a baking sheet, then place them in a freezer container. This way they’ll keep their shape and you’ll have no problem filling them with your favorite veggie mixture!!
~Green pepper
~A sack of hot peppers (jalapenos and Fresnos)
~Cucumbers
Bag of mixed onions
~Purple Cabbage: This will stay fresh for a loooong time in the refridgerator. We shred ours and put it in a ziploc bag and store it in the fridge. Then just pull it out when we want some!
~Sungold Cherry Tomatoes: One of those “it’s still summer” treats!
