Week #2 of Fall Farm Share Program

Happy Fall! It sure feels like fall around the farm with the pumpkins being harvested and corn stalks being cut! Plus, mornings are cooler and we leave our flannels on a little long each day!

But how about those glorious blue skies??!

We are busy getting ready for the kick off of our Pumpkintober month but also trying to keep up with harvest season! It’s crazy busy and there’s always work to be done but we love this time of year! We still haven’t had a frost yet, so the crops are still at it! You can definitely tell they are slowing down and have reached their peak, but on the flip side, they are also feeling the crunch of the season so they are rapidly trying to produce more. I can not even keep up with hot peppers or the sun gold tomatoes! Wow!

What’s in your bags this week….

~Tomatoes

~Eggplant

~Cucumbers

~Onions: Store these in your garage or your basement. Keep them dry and cool. Use the white ones first as they aren’t a long keeper. You received 2 reds, 2 whites and 2 yellows.

~Basil: The last taste of summer basil!

~Jalapenos: These plants are out of control! Funny thing? I told Farmer Jon early in the season not to expect any hot peppers because the spring weather impact them so hard that I was sure they would never produce! Ha…jokes on me!!

~Carrots: The star of the show this week! We can keep them in the store! As fast as we pick them, they are gone! Enjoy!

~Beets: It’s strange, we put beets in the store all summer long and they don’t sell very well. But once fall hits, everyone is looking for beets! Well, today they are in your bags! My grandmother was Polish and cooked all the Polish food when we were kids. One of my favorites was called Budowki. It’s more commonly called Borscht but from the area where our family originated we had different names. Anyway, it’s a lovely soup and a great way to use your beets. Here’s a similar recipe to my Gram’s family recipe: POLISH BEET SOUP RECIPE

~Zucchini: Mostly yellow zucchini right now! The green is slowing down but still getting some!

Have a wonderful week!

Happy Homecoming to the UM Grizzlies!
